The Canadian province of Alberta is set to introduce its own regulated online gambling market, following the growth seen in Ontario’s iGaming sector. The new framework aims to boost the industry while prioritizing safeguards for players.

Official iGaming Launch Expected in 2026

Alberta plans to open its online casino market later in 2026 with a regulatory framework centered on player safety. The province intends to implement measures designed to protect vulnerable individuals and maintain responsible gaming standards.

Licenses will require operators to uphold strict regulations and implement advanced player protection tools, such as deposit limits and session time restrictions, from the outset.

Marketing by licensed operators will be closely monitored to ensure it does not target minors or young adults. For example, advertisements featuring professional athletes will be banned to prevent undue influence on younger audiences.

Additionally, all licensed platforms must offer self-exclusion programs that allow players to control their gaming activity and seek help when needed.

Operators will also have an obligation to actively support players who show signs of problem gambling by providing assistance and resources.

Addressing the Black Market and Promoting Legal Alternatives

Dale Nally, Alberta’s Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction, highlighted that the best choice is for individuals not to gamble. However, recognizing that those wishing to play currently only have access to unregulated sites, the government is stepping in to offer a safe and transparent regulated platform.

The introduction of a legal online gaming market is also intended to reduce the dominance of illegal operators, which currently control an estimated 70% of the market in Alberta. By establishing a regulated environment, Alberta aims to retain more revenue within the province and provide a safer gambling experience for its residents.

With the regulatory framework now in place, prospective commercial operators may apply for licenses through Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) to begin serving the local market once the iGaming launch occurs.
