Australian Regulator Targets Illegal Gambling Promoters

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has intensified its efforts to combat illegal gambling in the country by blocking thousands of websites that operate without proper licensing. These sites offer unauthorized sports betting and online casino services, violating Australian gambling laws.

ACMA Focuses on Influencers Promoting Unlicensed Gambling

Recently, ACMA has broadened its crackdown to target social media personalities who use their platforms to promote these unlicensed gambling sites. The regulator has initiated investigations into several streamers suspected of breaching gambling regulations.

Although ACMA did not disclose the names of those being investigated, media reports have identified some suspects, including Emily Webb, known for her content on OnlyFans, and Jordan Sami, a former Rugby League athlete.

Websites linked to these individuals have already been blocked by ACMA, with internet service providers instructed to enforce the removals. Beyond pursuing specific individuals, ACMA is actively warning influencers about the legal risks involved in endorsing illegal gambling services.

The authority is also collaborating with international counterparts to pressure offshore operators who target Australian customers without license, aiming to reduce the illegal gambling market’s reach.

Severe Penalties for Non-Compliance

Since launching its manual website-blocking strategy, ACMA has taken down over 1,500 illegal gambling sites. It warns that individuals promoting unlicensed gambling content may face fines of approximately AUD 59,400 (around USD 41,700).

More serious penalties, including fines up to AUD 2.4 million (USD 1.68 million), could apply to those facilitating access to these illegal platforms. Despite these stringent measures, unregulated gambling operators continue to find promoters willing to target Australian users, who are notable for their enthusiasm for gambling.
