Cleveland police apprehended a man after he allegedly took his family hostage.

Michael Scholz threw a Bible at his children and told them to pray for their lives, relatives said.

Police said Scholz showed up at the west side home of his ex-wife and their children before 2 a.m.

Officers said he woke up his family when he started firing shots outside and inside the home on Bush Avenue at West 41st Street.

Family members said he made them put their faces down on floor. He said he would shoot their feet off.

They also said he pistol-whipped his ex-wife and fired about a dozen shots.

When police showed up, he became distracted and the family escaped out the back door and windows. They said they were startled, stunned and afraid.

There were about 40 police officers and SWAT at the scene. Officers fired several distraction devices at the home to get his attention.

Scholz was found just after 8 a.m. walking down the street a few blocks away. He was apprehended without incident, police said.
