The Elyria Fire Department has not said what caused the house explosion at 187 Bath Street.
According to a neighbor who heard the explosion and went inside to help, one person with burns was transported to a local hospital and several others were uninjured in the blast. Captain Joe Pronesti, of the Elyria Fire Department said when they arrived on the scene they saw the victim standing outside. She has only been identified as a 24-year-old female.
“We got the call around 11:08 a.m. for a house explosion. When we arrived on the scene it was pretty chaotic,” he said. The fire was blaring in the rear of the home. Pronesti said there were 5 apartments in the back of the home where the blaze seemed to do the most damage.
Don Starcher, a neighbor on the street said he saw the victim and helped her out of the home. He also said she was not alone. “I got her across the street then I ran back and then there were two other people in the downstairs and I got them out,” he said.
The fire is still under investigation and no word on what caused the explosion.
The victim is in fair condition at MetroHealth Medican Center.
