STORM REPORTS: Severe storms batter northern Ohio Wednesday

A cold front sliding east across Ohio combined with high humidity across the state to fuel a line of severe thunderstorms, which affected every county in the NewsChannel5 viewing area.

Every county in northern Ohio was placed under a severe thunderstorm warning during the afternoon as the storms rolled by. Several counties, including Cuyahoga, Wayne, Medina and Stark, were also warned for possible tornadoes during the event. A wall cloud was spotted over Bedford Heights just after 2 p.m., prompting the first tornado warning. A wall cloud is a lowering of the cloud base of the storm in a small area and is a pre-cursor to possible tornado development. Funnel clouds were also spotted near Wadsworth. A team from the National Weather Service Office in Pittsburgh will investigate whether wind damage caused in Tuscarawas, Carroll, & Coshocton Counites was caused by a tornado touchdown.

Major flash flooding was also a problem for the area, as storms dumped between 1 and 4 inches of rain as they moved by. Highest rainfall totals (3"+) occurred near Kimball, Bellevue, Milan & Norwalk along the Erie & Huron County border. Flood warnings continue in effect for several area rivers into the weekend.

Here is a partial list of damage reports that have been submitted to the Cleveland National Weather Service Office at Hopkins Airport. The listing includes the time of occurrence, the city & county.
