Mark Johnson's October forecast for northern Ohio: Transition from mild to cool

CLEVELAND - Wow. It seemed to me like September flew by this year. Now, we enter the cooler month of October.

What do I mean by cool?

Well, on Oct. 1, the AVERAGE HIGH and LOW temperatures for northern Ohio look like this:

Cleveland 68/50
Akron 67/47
Canton 67/47
Youngstown 67/47

But, look how much our average temperatures cool by Halloween. Oct. 31 AVERAGE HIGHS and LOWS look like this:

Cleveland 57/41
Akron 56/38
Canton 56/38
Mansfield 56/38

We cool an average 11 degrees F off our average highs and 9 degrees F off our average lows between now and the end of October.

Enjoy the green leaves while you can see them as well. Our fall leaf color display peaks here in northern Ohio between the second and third weekend of the month. Then, they quickly fall off. You have lots of raking to do by Halloween.

First frosts are a common for many of you during October. The average date for the first 32-degree reading:

Cleveland - October 29
Akron - October 18
Canton - October 18
Mansfield - October 17

Lots of daylight is lost this month as well. On Oct. 1, northern Ohio sees 11 hours and 44 minutes of daylight. By Halloween, we see only 10 hours and 25 minutes. We lose 1 hour and 19 minutes of daylight during October.
