March weather sets new records for cold in Northeastern Ohio

CLEVELAND - At 11:50 p.m. on Monday, March 3, the temperature at Cleveland Hopkins Airport dropped to 1 degree. That broke the previous record low temperature for Cleveland of 2 degrees, set on March 3, 2003.

A few hours later, the temperature dropped to 0 degrees. That broke the record low temperature for March 4 in Cleveland. That temperature was also 2 degrees, set back in 1943. Mansfield also saw temperatures drop to 1 degree on Tuesday, March 4. That's good enough to set a new record low. The old record was also 2 degrees from 1943.

What's even more impressive, the temperature during the day on Monday March 3 never made it above 12 degrees. That set a new record for COLDEST HIGH TEMPERATURE ever on March 3 in Cleveland. The old record for coldest high temperature ever on that date was 14 degrees. That high temperature occurred in 1943.

Remember, too: Our average high for March 3 & 4 in Cleveland is 42 degrees!

Yes. Records are kept for coldest HIGH temperatures as well. For instance, In Cleveland, the COLDEST HIGH TEMPERATURE for any day in March is 9 degrees. That occurred on March 21st, 1885!

For Akron & Canton, The COLDEST HIGH temperature ever in March, was 11 degrees on March 3, 1943. Mansfield's COLDEST HIGH for March is 12 degrees. That reading was measured on March 1, 1980.
