Ghosts of Christmas Weather Past

CLEVELAND - A historic look back at Christmas Weather past.

We tried really hard this year. A White Christmas was in the cards. December temperatures, so far, have averaged 4 degrees BELOW normal across Northern Ohio. And we managed to pile up a pretty impressive snow pack to boot.  But, alas, Mother Nature has other ideas. She's pumping in some warm air and lots of rain the weekend before Christmas. Heavy rains and temps near 60 degrees will surely melt all but the tallest parking lot snow pile.

So, our prospects for a White Christmas will be limited this year, despite coming so close. As for Christmas's past: Since 1900, Cleveland has had measurable snow on the ground 57 times...or about 50% of the time. The most snowfall on any Christmas Day in Greater Cleveland History was 13-inches. That occurred twice in 2004 and 1995.

The most rainfall ever on Christmas Day was 1.83 inches way back in 1979.

The coldest temperature on the Yule Log occurred in 1983. That Cleveland low was -10F! Warmest December 25th ever was back in 1982. I can remember eating Christmas dinner out on the deck in short sleeves. The high that day was 66 degrees.

Here is the weather for Cleveland Christmas's past:
