Cold Weather Blog: Water main breaks, parking bans and cold weather advice

CLEVELAND - Extremely cold temperatures and snowy conditions can cause problems. Here are the latest reports from around northeast Ohio:

Most FirstEnergy customers in the area have power again - only about 3,700 outages remain, mostly in Lake County.

The Greater Cleveland RTA reports that the Red Line is still down, but the Blue/Green line is still running and is close to on-time after significant delays this morning. Buses are out, but running late - many are broken down though mechanics are working to fix them. 

"We encourage people to get on any bus they see at this point, even if it is not their bus, so we can keep them warm, getting them to their destination," the GCRTA writes.

Cleveland EMS has treated 15 patients for cold-related afflictions and one person has died, preliminarily, from cold exposure. 

The Cleveland Animal Protective League has seized six dogs from two properties and will continue to respond to reports of pets left outside today. If you see an animal left outside for too long, you can report it to the APL at (216) 771-4616.

The Horseshoe Casino will reopen at 4 p.m., but a burst water pipe will prevent the food court to reopen until further notice.

Crocker Park is open, but many stores are closed today: Anthony Vince Nail Spa, Bath & Body Works, Eddie Bauer, Franscesca's, Gap, Head Quarters Salon & Spa by Aveda, LOFT, Mademoiselle, Sephora, Urban Outfitters, Victoria's Secret and Yankee Candle. Barnes & Noble was scheduled to open at noon.

As of 8:20 a.m., about 6,000 people in Cleveland’s eastern suburbs are without power, mostly Richmond Heights and Beachwood. That's down from 16,391 at 5:30 a.m. 

The power outages were caused after a transmission wire went down because of the extreme cold weather, First Energy spokesman Mark Durbin said.

Cleveland YMCA tweets that all their Youth Programs have been canceled, and child care and child watch closed. Adult Programs still on.

These restaurants also reported they will be closed today: Bistro 185, The flying fig, Provenance at The Cleveland Museum of Art, Pickwick & Frolic and Willoughby Brewing Company.

Beachwood police said the city’s community center is open at 25325 Fairmount Blvd., Beachwood, OH 44122.

Richmond Heights reported that residents can go to Richmond Town Square Mall to get warm. The food court doors are open.

Hopkins International spokeswoman Jackie Mayo tells NewsChannel5 about 200 flights have been canceled. Many because of problems at destinations but in Cleveland, crews dealing with ice, wind and blowing snow. Tools to navigate on travel delays.

Monday night, the Cleveland Animal Protective League posted on its Facebook page "the heat went out in the dog kennels at our Everyday Adoption Center in the Parma PetSmart store." But volunteers and staff were able to place all the dogs without a home.

Horseshoe Casino Cleveland will reopen Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Spread buffet will reopen Wednesday at 7 a.m. for breakfast. 

Akron Municipal Court is closed Tuesday.

All Ohio Social Security Offices will close Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Tallmadge City Council Organizational/Committee meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday is rescheduled for Thursday, Jan. 9 at 6:05 p.m.

Meals on Wheels of Stark and Wayne Counties will not deliver Tuesday, Jan. 7 due to subzero temperatures.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum will be closed Tuesday.

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Due to the dangerously cold conditions, the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court will be closed on Tuesday, January 7. This closure affects the General Division, Juvenile Court, Domestic Relations Court, Probate Court and the 8th District Court of Appeals. Any planned Tuesday hearings will be rescheduled and any filings that are due Tuesday will be moved to the next day of business. As of now the Courts plan to be open at their regularly scheduled times on Wednesday. 

Ford Motor Company Cleveland Engine Plant will resume production operations at 6 a.m. on Tuesday. Employees should report to work at their normal start time.

The Akron City Council evening meeting scheduled for Monday, January 6, 2014 at 7:00 p.m., has been canceled due to weather.

The Cleveland Museum of Art is closed Tuesday.

Portage County Administration building is closed until Wednesday.

Al Bubba Baker's BBQ will be handing out ribs and chili for free to the needy at The Emergency Men’s Shelter located at 2100 Lakeside Avenue Cleveland starting at 4PM today.

House of Blues Cleveland will be closed Tuesday due to poor weather conditions, reopening as usual Weds.

Mentor Recreation classes and activities and Mentor Senior Center classes and activities have been canceled for Monday, January 6, 2014 and Tuesday, January 7, 2014.

CSU will close at 3 p.m. today and stay closed through tomorrow, Jan. 7. 

Shaker Hts RITA Subpoena Program canceled Tuesday.

Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District offices will be closed on Tuesday.

Parma Municipal Court will be closed on Tuesday

The Village of Richfield Administrative Offices will close at 12 noon today due to the severe weather.
The offices shall remain closed until Wednesday Jan. 8 at 8 AM.

The City of Shaker Heights has postponed this evening’s Organizational Council Meeting until next Monday, Jan. 13, at 7 pm.  In addition, trash collection scheduled for Tuesday is canceled and all collections Tuesday through Friday are delayed by one day.  Further, the Recreation Department has canceled all programs after 3 pm Monday and all day Tuesday. Thornton Park Ice Arena remains open both days.

Monday Night Bingo, tonight only, at the K of C Hall in Avon, Ohio (Lorain County) will be closed due to the weather

Maple Heights 6:10 a.m. - Water main break at 5156 Theodore Street.  The water company was called to the scene.

Brunswick 6 a.m. - The city of Brunswick initiated a parking snow ban for the next 24 hours - no parking on city streets.

Garfield Heights 4 a.m. - Water main break on Orchard Road near McCracken Road intersection. The road is not currently shut down.

United Fee Waiver – “In some cases where severe weather and other uncontrollable events are impacting United’s operations, we may, at our sole discretion issue an exception policy designed to accommodate customers with restricted tickets who wish to change their travel in advance of any potential disruption.”

Ravenna - The Center of Hope in Ravenna, located at 1034 W. Main St., will be open 24 hours beginning on through Wednesday, Jan. 8.

Kent - Kent Social Services in Kent, located at will be open 24 hours through Wednesday. 

Ohio Highway Patrol - Call # 677 to report stranded motorists and remember to prepare for the record low freezing temperatures. Ensure your car battery, cooling system, tires, wipers and defroster are all in working order.

Oberlin - The Oberlin Weekday Community Meal at Christ Episcopal Church will be closed on Monday 1/6 and Tuesday 1/7 due to the weather
