Forecast: Wintry mix likely Friday

CLEVELAND - Winter Weather Advisory for Ottawa & Sandusky Counties from 1am to 7am Friday. A light coating of ice is possible for the morning commute. Untreated surfaces will be slippery.

Winter Weather Advisory for Ashtabula County from 1am tonight through 7pm Friday. A light coating of freezing rain is possible toward dawn with 2-5" of snow possible during the afternoon Friday.

10:00 pm Update: Cloud will thicken up tonight ahead of the next and final Alberta Clipper weather system. Evening temperatures will hover in the middle and upper 30s with dry conditions. Precipitation in the form of rain will arrive after midnight tonight. With temperatures expected to be a degree or two above freezing for most of us, I am not very concerned about freezing rain and ice. The exception could be Lake, Northern Geauga, & Ashtabula Counties where temperatures could drop below freezing for a few hours before dawn. A very light coating of ice is possible there before temperatures warm up enough for just rain.

Rain is likely for the Friday morning rush hour. Temperatures should be in the middle 30s. The cold front arrives quickly by 9 am. That means rain will change over to snow from west to east. Driving will become slick from mid morning thru at least early afternoon as a burst of moderate snow blankets the area with up to 2 inches of snow. The main snow band should be along the Ohio- Pennsylvania line by noon. Scattered snow showers will rotate in behind the front thru the afternoon and evening. Total snow thru midnight Friday should be in the 1-3" range in most spots, with a few areas east of Cleveland seeing up to 5 inches. Temperatures thru the afternoon will drop back into the middle 20s.
