FAIRPORT HARBOR, Ohio -- Officials have confirmed that an earthquake shook part of northeast Ohio Monday afternoon.
Many NewsChannel5 viewers called in shortly after 3 p.m. to report that they felt the earthquake rumble through many communities, including Ashtabula, Perry, Madison and Fairport Harbor. The quake apparently had a preliminary magnitude of 3.4, according to USGS officials. The epicenter was 4 miles north of Fairport Harbor, and the quake was 3 miles under the surface. Laurie Welch felt the quake while working in Fairport Harbor and called her husband at home several miles away in Madison. He also felt the tremors.. "It felt like a wind gust hit the side of the building, and the building started shaking," she said. The same area felt a quake on Jan. 21, 2002. A seismograph at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History measures tremors, and Monday's quake showed up on the device. It's still not clear how powerful, or how far up the Richter scale the quake will officially measure. There were no reports of any injuries, and it is not yet known if there was any damage from the earthquake. Click here for more information on earthquake safety.
