Unclaimed Funds Making Folks Rich!

One Local Woman Collected $10,000

moneyCLEVELAND, Posted 5:02 p.m. January 27, 1999 -- One local woman's father left her money she never knew he had!

"We just never dreamed that there could be any money out there," Judy Perry told NewsChannel5 about the money she discovered in her father's old accounts.

About two-dozen accounts were just sitting there with cash since Jack Staples died back in 1990.

"My dad was an investment banker and kept track of his money very well," Perry explained. "The executor of his estate was a lawyer who was my brother-in-law."

But after Staple's name showed up on the Unclaimed Funds list on WEWS, Perry checked it out. It turns out the money came from old stock dividends.

dimeA total of more than $10,000!

Cuyahoga County Treasurer James Rokakis thinks the state makes it too hard for people to find those forgotten funds. His staff helped Perry, and now Rokakis is pushing to change laws that will give local treasurers a lot more control over accounts.

"And when we have control over this function, we're going to go after each and every one of these people and return that money," Rokakis said.
