Deadbeat Spouses Pay With Unclaimed Funds

New Ohio Law Seizes Money From Deadbeats

elizabeth PARMA, Posted 6:06 p.m. December 22, 1998 -- The Cuyahoga County Treasurer says deadbeat parents owe their kids and former spouses millions of dollars in back child support.

And thanks to a union between two county agencies, it's payback time.

"I never thought I would see a penny of (the money), so it really was a gift, but one that I deserved," Elizabeth Catcher told NewsChannel5.

Catcher received more than $5,000 from back child support from her ex-husband. How?

checkCuyahoga County agencies are using a new provision in Ohio law to seize money from deadbeat spouses. In Catcher's case, the money was sitting in an unclaimed account that belonged to her former husband.

The county performed a computer cross check, found the money and mailed it to Elizabeth, instead of her ex.

The seizure program will help collect some of the money for people.

The county's support enforcement agency has reviewed more than 500 unclaimed accounts to date. They have found money for five of them.
