County Officials Want Frank Russo To Step Down

There is a fresh call for Cuyahoga County Auditor Frank Russo to step down in the wake of an ongoing federal corruption investigation.

Russo has not been charged with a crime nor has he been mentioned by name, but Russo's top aide has been charged with taking bribes in return for steering lucrative appraisal contracts to a private contractor.

Sandy Klimkowski is accused of delivering more than $1 million in bribes to a public official believed to be Russo.

Russo's home and office were searched by FBI agents more than a year ago.

County Commissioner Peter Lawson Jones said he wants Russo to step down, and so did County Treasurer Jim Rokakis.

Russo could not be found at his office when NewsChannel5 went looking for him on Tuesday.

NewsChannel5 was told that Russo has no plans to resign, something Rokakis believes should happen.

"I don't know how many informational indictments you have to read before you determine that there's a pretty good chance that if it wasn't nailed down in that office, it was for sale," said Rokakis.

The state auditor's office confirmed that it could begin its own investigation into appraisals done in Russo's office, but no decision has been made.

Rokakis called for both the state auditor and attorney general to step in.
