Federal Grant To Save 23 Akron Police Officer Jobs

There's good news in Akron Tuesday after the city learned that a federal grant will save the jobs of some police officers.

Earlier this month, Mayor Don Plusquellic announced the city would have to cut more than 100 police and firefighters to balance the city's budget.

Plusqullic said that 23 police officers will be rehired with federal stimulus money. The grant will maintain the 23 officers for three years and stipulates that the city must maintain the officers' pay for at least one year after that.

In addition to this good news, several programs may whittle the 75 police layoff number down to 20.

Plusquellic said in the addition to the 23 rehires, federal justice assistance grant money can save another 14 jobs.

Also, the mayor wants to put 18 more officers in Akron schools, officers the school district would pay.

The impending layoffs spurred a rally in Akron Monday night. Hundreds of residents joined members of the safety forces, hoping to save jobs.

Police officers expressed concerns about the lack of back up, and their families are a little more worried about whether their officer loved ones would be coming home safe every night.

The mayor said three employee unions have tentatively agreed to make concessions to save jobs and he's urging the police and fire unions to do the same.

The president of the police union said he welcomes any opportunity to bring officers back. He said he's meeting with members of the administration on Friday to try to find a resolution to the layoffs.
