Peregrine Falcon Chicks Get Names, Bands

POSTED: 11:06 am EDT May 13, 2008
UPDATED: 12:33 pm EDT May 13, 2008

Four peregrine falcon chicks were given metal bands on their legs Tuesday by wildlife biologists, according to the Ohio Department Of Natural Resources.

The females' names are Spirit and Tiki, and the males are Tiler and Thriller.

The banding allows experts to examine the chicks and to obtain blood samples for DNA fingerprinting. The leg bands act like Social Security numbers, ODNR officials said.

They also allow wildlife officials to track their movement and migration routes.

There are 22 nesting pairs of falcons throughout the state and 12 are in northeast Ohio.
