A teen accused of raping his teenage girlfriend is now accused of shooting his alleged victim with a shotgun after he was released on house-arrest.

Police said the 17-year-old suspect allegedly kidnapped and raped a teenage girl.

Despite the violent nature of the charges against him, the boy was released from the juvenile detention facility into the custody of his family because of an overcrowded juvenile detention facility, NewsChannel5 reported.

The teen also faces additional charges of felonious assault.

His 18-year-old alleged victim is recovering at an area hospital, a shotgun wound to the face requiring her to undergo reconstructive surgery.

Police said the suspect attempted to kill the girl at her westside home because she would have been a witness against him.

NewsChannel5 reported that he was released to house arrest because on the day he was incarcerated for the alleged rape, the juvenile detention facility was overcrowded, with just 72 beds to accommodate 173 juvenile offenders.

Officials said the magistrate released the 17-year-old for home detention because the suspect had only a previous misdemeanor charges.

In court Tuesday, the boy's father said he didn't know how his son got a hold of a shotgun.

The teen is facing adult charges of attempted murder and witness intimidation.
