Woman Says She Was Victimized By Sales Tax Shuffle

Ohio Law Says Woman Didn't Have To Pay Tax On Supplies

POSTED: 11:47 am EDT September 9, 2008

A Euclid woman said she was victimized by a sales tax shuffle.

She contacted Troubleshooter Joe Pagonakis for help.

Mary Lou Camillio paid $2,000 for a newly upgraded kitchen. But problems started when the company she hired to do the job, sent her a bill that included $65.30 in sales tax.

For months the company kept billing Camillio, even adding service charges to the unpaid tax bill.

The Troubleshooter team contacted the Ohio Department of Taxation and the contractor and determined the sales tax on the items used in her kitchen job had already been paid.

"I didn't know where to turn, so I called Joe Pagonakis and he helped me," said Camillio.

Ohio law makes it clear that the contractor who bought the supplies for the job should pay the sales tax, Pagonakis reported.

Sales tax for supplies should not be itemized on your bill, even though in many cases that amount is built into the total price for the job.
