Pennsylvania Monument At Gettysburg Rededicated

POSTED: 6:31 p.m. EDT July 23, 2003

The Pennsylvania monument on the Gettysburg battlefield was rededicated Wednesday after extensive restoration work.

"It is a great day for all of you who made this possible, but it's a great day for all Pennsylvania," Gov. Ed Rendell said.

The ceremony celebrated the completion of a $1.7 million restoration project that restored the monument's beauty to the way it looked in 1910.

For 15 months, construction crews essentially rebuilt the monument from the ground up. The support system was badly deteriorated.

The governor placed a wreath near the center of the monument. Minutes later, Rendell climbed to the top of the memorial for a panoramic view of the battleground.

The park service wants to make sure the restored monument continues to look its best. They said security has been beefed up to curb vandalism.
