MEDINA, Ohio - A two-car crash in Medina County late Sunday night killed one person and sent six others to the hospital.
Shirley Klinect, 75, of Burbank, Ohio, was a front-seat passenger and died at the scene as a result of the crash, according to a release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred at about 11:00 p.m. at the intersection of Friendsville Road and U.S. Route 224, and investigators said that Shirley was a passenger in a car that was traveling southbound on Friendsville Road.
Another car was driving eastbound on U.S. Route 224, and investigators said the driver of that car went through a red light and struck Klinect's vehicle. At this time, we are not naming the driver of that car because nobody has been charged with a crime. Two people were in that car at the time of the crash.
"(The driver's) statement was that his sandal fell off and he looked down for a minute to straighten out his sandal and the next thing he knew he was running the red light," Highway Patrol Lieutenant William P. Haymaker told NewsChannel5.
Four other people were in Klinect's vehicle, including a 3-year-old child, and all of them were transported to local hospitals. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.
The accident remains under investigation, and the use of drugs of alcohol is unknown at this time.
