Two killed after two semis involved in crash on Interstate 76 eastbound at Grant Street in Akron

AKRON, Ohio - Two people are dead after a crash involving two semis on Interstate 76 eastbound Monday night.

It happened at approximately 7:45 pm near Grant Street.

A semi-tractor trailer was traveling east on I-76 when the driver failed to notice slowing traffic, attempted to swerve around another semi-tractor trailer but hit its rear end, the Summit County Sheriff's Office said.

The driver, a 40-year old-man, and his 13-year-old male passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. The Summit County Examiner's Office identified the driver as Patrick Owen of Pismo Beach, Calfornia.

The other semi driver was transported to Akron General Medical Center where his injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

Akron police including hazmat, were called to the scene of the crash. The Akron Fire Department also responded.

For much of the overnight, only one lane of traffic was open on I-76 as debris and fuel littered the other two lanes.
