ELYRIA, Ohio -- The son of Elyria's police chief was killed in action in Iraq.

The Department of Defense has not yet said how Michael Medders Jr. died.

Medders graduated from Avon Lake High School, where he played football, baseball and sang in a choir.

NewsChannel5 reported that he wanted to join the military after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, but his family convinced him to earn his college degree first.

Medders was previously injured in May by a roadside bomb, and suffered a concussion.
