Rabies Case Reported Every 1 To 5 Years In Medina County

A bat with rabies bit a person in Medina County earlier this month.

The Ohio Department of Health Laboratory in Columbus said the bat was found in the city of Wadsworth.

The victim is getting rabies shots.

According to the health department, a rabies case occurs every one to five years in Medina County, and the last reported case was in 2007, also in a bat.

It is not unusual to find bats in homes. Health officials said if you run into a bat, try to capture it, wearing gloves and protective clothing.

So far in 2008, of the 54 reported positive rabies cases in Ohio, 48 have been bats, in addition to three raccoons and three skunks, the health department said.

Contact the Medina County Health Department at 330-723-9523 or toll free at 888-723-9688 to arrange for a rabies examination of a bat.

Rabies information is also available by visiting the Ohio Department of Health Web site at odh.ohio.gov or the Medina County Health Department Web site at medinahealth.org.
