Columbus Public Health confirmed a total of 481 mumps cases have been reported in three central Ohio counties, as of August 20.
To date, 254 have been linked to The Ohio State University outbreak.
Due to the high number of cases reported, health officials may ask unvaccinated students to stay home from school this year for nearly a month, ABC News reported.
If a mumps case is reported in a students' community, unvaccinated students will be asked to stay at home for at least 25 days.
