Hewitt, Roddick, Henman Reach Stella Artois Quarters

POSTED: 4:42 pm EDT June 9, 2005

The usual suspects were among Thursday's winners at The Stella Artois Championships, as two-time defending champion Andy Roddick, three-time winner Lleyton Hewitt and three-time runner-up Tim Henman posted third-round victories at this grass-court Wimbledon tune-up.

The top-seeded Hewitt handled 15th-seeded big Belarusian Max Mirnyi 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 as he seeks his fourth title here in six years. The 2002 Wimbledon winner captured this event back-to-back-to-back from 2000-02.

Hewitt is playing his first tennis since mid-March, as he was sidelined by foot and rib injuries, which forced him to miss the French Open.

The U.S. Open and Australian Open runner-up and former world No. 1 Hewitt's quarterfinal opponent on Friday will be 6-foot-10 Croat Ivo Karlovic, who shocked Hewitt in the opening round at Wimbledon in 2003.

The second-seeded Roddick continued his strong play at The Queen's Club by holding off 16th-seeded Slovakian Karol Beck 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. The American moved on with the help of 13 aces and nine double faults by Beck.

Roddick is seeking his third straight title here after beating Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean in the last two Stella Artois finals. Only John McEnroe and Hewitt have won this tournament three years in a row.

The former world No. 1 Roddick and Grosjean will meet for a third straight year here on Friday, as the seventh-seeded Frenchman overcame American James Blake 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (12-10) on Day 4. Grosjean saved five match points against the game Blake.

The 2004 Wimbledon runner-up Roddick is 5-1 lifetime against Grosjean, with all five victories coming in their last five meetings.

A third-seeded Henman is seeking a fourth trip to the final here after coming from behind to beat big-serving Aussie Chris Guccione 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-2. Henman lost to Hewitt in the 2001 and 2002 finals and gave way to the legendary Pete Sampras in the 1999 title match.

In other seeded action, No. 4 Czech Radek Stepanek stopped Brit Greg Rusedski 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), No. 10 Frenchman Richard Gasquet grounded fifth-seeded Croat Mario Ancic 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 and No. 6 Swede Thomas Johansson held off Englishman Andrew Murray 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (5-7), 7-5.

The aforementioned Karlovic dismissed Czech Tomas Zib 6-2, 6-4.

Friday's other quarters will pit Henman against the 2002 Australian Open champion Johansson and Stepanek versus Gasquet.
