Spain, Argentina Announce Squads For Davis Cup Final

POSTED: 2:50 pm EST November 11, 2008

(Sports Network) - The teams have been revealed for next week's Davis Cup final between visiting Spain and host Argentina.

The best-of-five tie will he held on an indoor hardcourt at Estadio Islas Malvinas in Mar del Plata.

The Spaniards, who will compete without world No. 1 superstar Rafael Nadal, will feature David Ferrer, Fernando Verdasco, Feliciano Lopez and Marcel Granollers, who takes Nadal's spot on the squad. The Wimbledon, French Open and Olympic champion Nadal pulled out this week, citing a knee injury.

Powerful Argentina will counter with Juan Martin del Potro, David Nalbandian, Jose Acasuso and Agustin Calleri. The 20-year-old del Potro is playing at the prestigious Tennis Masters Cup event in Shanghai this week.

Emilio Sanchez captains Spain, while the favored Argentines will be guided by Alberto Mancini. The Spaniards own two Davis Cup titles, with both coming this decade (2000, 2004), while Argentina has never hoisted the coveted chalice.

Spain is 2-0 all-time versus Argentina, which will host for the first time in this series. The Spaniards prevailed, at home, in 1926 and 2003.

The Spaniards reached this year's final by beating the 32-time and defending champion United States in a semifinal in Madrid.
