Jankovic Lands In Moscow QFs

POSTED: 2:15 pm EDT October 9, 2008

(Sports Network) - World No. 1 and U.S. Open runner-up Jelena Jankovic highlighted Thursday's second-round winners at the $1.34 million Kremlin Cup.

The 23-year-old Jankovic dropped the first set on Day 4 before charging back for a 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 6-2 victory over Russian wild card Vera Dushevina on the indoor carpet at Olympic Stadium. Jankovic is seeking her third title in three events, as she's fresh off back-to-back championships in Beijing and Stuttgart, respectively.

Jankovic's quarterfinal opponent on Friday will be dangerous Italian Flavia Pennetta, who overcame Russian wild card Ekaterina Makarova 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

In other Day-4 action, seventh-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva dismantled struggling Slovak Daniela Hantuchova 6-1, 6-0 and unseeded Russian Nadia Petrova cooled off 18-year-old Dane Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 3-2, as Wozniacki retired due to an upper respiratory illness. Wozniacki was fresh off her title in Tokyo last week and had won three of her previous seven tournaments. Petrova was a runner-up in Stuttgart last week.

Friday's other quarterfinals will pit second-seeded Dinara Safina against fifth-seeded fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, third-seeded and defending Moscow champion Elena Dementieva versus her fellow Muscovite Petrova and Zvonareva against rising Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova. The Olympic gold medalist and two-time major runner-up Dementieva defeated American superstar Serena Williams in last year's marquee finale here. Safina was this year's French Open and Olympic runner-up.

The 2008 Moscow titlist will earn $196,900.
