POSTED: 10:08 am EST January 7, 2007
UPDATED: 12:19 pm EST February 2, 2007

On Sunday night, Jan. 7, legendary WEWS NewsChannel5 made Cleveland the nation's most advanced high definition (HD) television city in America. Cleveland is the first city where its top three television stations broadcast their local news in HD.

NewsChannel5's launch includes exclusively HD weather and expands the station's HD programming to more than 12 hours each day.

"Our leadership in high-definition programming is remarkable and consistent with the legacy of our On Your Side station," said John Butte, Vice President & General Manager. "WEWS was first on the air in Ohio in 1947, and we're first again in 2007 with the best and most high-definition programming."

Exclusive HD Weather

Early in 2006, NewsChannel5 introduced the most powerful radar system in Cleveland television –- the Power of 5 Doppler Network. Now the station is taking weather coverage to another new level with high-definition weather.

"The Power of 5 HD will not only deliver wide screen weather forecasts but also give viewers the most crisp and clear pictures of radar and maps that they've ever seen," said news director Steve Hyvonen. "Our priority is keeping viewers safe and we continue to invest in weather technology that helps us explain and show Cleveland's weather clearly and accurately, now more than ever."
