Lower Insurance Rate With Little Black Box

Device Spies, Saves Money

A major auto insurance provider is offering discounts to safe drivers, but there's a catch. You have to prove you're a safe driver to get the discount. A small device monitors your every driving move.

The device was created for Progressive Insurance. It is called "My Rate." The device fits into a special port in your steering column and records whether you tend to speed to a stop, make sudden starts and stops, go over the speed limit or make unsafe maneuvers.

According to Richard Hutchison with Progressive, "It gives you a chance to learn about your driving and change it if you think you need to."

When you get home, you can unplug the device from the car and plug it into your computer where you can track your savings and even compare your driving to other "My Rate" users.

"My Rate" can also help parents keep tabs on their teenagers' driving habits. It might also help parents keep their kids' insurance rates down.

Progressive is testing the "My Rate" program in six states and could introduce it in Ohio next year.

Progressive isn't the only insurance provider offering discounts.

With Allstate's "Your Choice Auto" policy, customers are putting cash back into their pockets. Allstate’s Deborah Walker said, "If you're accident-free for the first six months, you'll receive a check for up to 5 percent off of your 6-month premium.”
