Rookie goalie Calvin Pickard's 25-save shutout - his and the team's fourth shutout of the season - carried the Lake Erie Monsters (27-23-2-7) to a 2-0 victory over the Peoria Rivermen (25-24-4-3) Tuesday at Quicken Loans Arena.
David van der Gulik and Brian Sutherby scored for the Monsters, who snapped a two-game losing skid with the win. The Monsters and Peoria meet again Thursday evening, when the Monsters will conclude an eight-game home stand.
After a scoreless first period, Mike Sgarbossa's shot from the top of the left circle deflected off van der Gulik and into the Peoria net for the game's first goal at 11:48 of the second frame. The goal was credited to van der Gulik - his 17 th of the season - and assisted by Sgarbossa and Luke Walker.
In the third period, Tyler McNeely backhanded a perfect pass to Sutherby in front of the Peoria net off a rush, and Sutherby tapped the puck over the line to give the Monsters a 2-0 lead on his first goal of the season. Dan Maggio also assisted on the goal at 6:47 of the third.
Pickard is 16-13-5 after stopping 25 of 25 shots in the win. Jake Allen took the loss in net for Peoria, stopping 19 of 21; he is 13-19-2.
The Monsters and Rivermen meet Thursday night at The Q, with the puck dropping at 7:00 PM.
NOTES: Pickard's shutout comes in his first career meeting with Peoria… the Monsters move to 2-0-0-0 against the Rivermen this season, with the Monsters taking the first meeting between the two clubs by a 4-3 score in a shootout in Peoria on November 1… The Monsters are now 13-12-1-4 at home… With his assist, Luke Walker now has three points on a goal and two assists over his last two games… The Monsters were 0-3 on the power play, and are 0-11 on the power play over their last two games… The Monsters were 4-4 on the penalty kill, and are now 13-14 on the penalty kill over their last four games.
