Rookie netminder Calvin Pickard stopped 33 shots in net for the Lake Erie Monsters (29-30-3-7), but his team was unable to solve the Peoria Rivermen (31-30-4-3), as the Monsters fell 2-0 to the Rivermen Saturday night at Carver Arena in Peoria.
Derek Nesbitt tipped a Jani Hakanpaa point shot for the game's first goal, giving Peoria a 1-0 lead at 12:24 of the first period.
In the second period, Nesbitt centered a pass to the slot that was redirected top-shelf by Andrew Murray to give Peoria a 2-0 lead at 5:29 of the period. It would be the last scoring for either team in the game.
Pickard turned away 12 Rivermen shots in the third period, but the Monsters offense was unable to get past Peoria goalie Brian Elliott.
Pickard is 16-19-5 after the loss; he stopped 33 of 35. Elliott, who was on a conditioning assignment from the St. Louis Blues, stopped 27 of 27 shots for Peoria and is 1-1-0 in the AHL this season.
The Monsters will continue their five-game road swing on Wednesday at 11:00 AM Eastern in Toronto.
