CLEVELAND - After surrendering four goals in the opening period, the Lake Erie Monsters (10-8-1-1) were unable to overcome the early deficit against the San Antonio Rampage (6-10-0-3), and fell by a score of 6-2 at Quicken Loans Arena Friday night. Geoff Walker and Sean Sullivan scored for the Monsters. The two teams will meet again Saturday at 1:00 PM at The Q.
Tyson Strachan netted a power play goal from the center point for San Antonio at the 5:36 mark of the opening period, jumpstarting the Rampage offensive outburst in the first frame. Jared Gomes, Eric Selleck, and Greg Rallo also scored for San Antonio in the first period, as the Rampage led 4-0 after 20 minutes.
Monsters starting goalie Sami Aittokallio stopped 13 of 17 shots in the first period, and was relieved by Calvin Pickard when the second began.
Geoff Walker scored his second goal of the season and put the Monsters on the board at the 6:49 mark of the second period. Walker cut to the back-door of the San Antonio net, took a feed from defenseman Karl Stollery, and immediately punched the puck into the net to make the score 4-1. Stollery and Mark Olver assisted on the goal.
San Antonio extended their lead to 6-1 with two goals in the third period before Sean Sullivan scored his first goal as a Monster on a shot top-shelf from a very tight angle at the bottom of the right circle. Tyson Barrie and Patrick Bordeleau assisted on Sullivan's first goal of the season.
Aittokallio (5-5-0) stopped 13 of 17 shots and suffers the loss in net for the Monsters. Calvin Pickard stopped 15 of 17 in relief. Jacob Markstrom (4-6-1) stopped 37 of 39 Monsters shots in the Rampage win.
The Monsters and San Antonio meet Saturday at 1:00 PM at Quicken Loans Arena, and the Monsters finish their weekend Sunday at 3:00 PM in Toronto against the Marlies.
NOTES: The Monsters are now 2-4-1-0 at home… The Monsters were 4-0-0-0 against San Antonio last season… Karl Stollery has five assists over his last five games… Patrick Bordeleau, after scoring in Sundays win in Hamilton, has points in back-to-back games for the Monsters… With an assist each, Mark Olver and Tyson Barrie are now tied with Thomas Pock for the Monsters team lead with 11 assists each… The Monsters are now 2-2-0-0 this season in the first game of three games in three nights stretches… San Antonio was 1-1 on the power play, and the Monsters were 0-3 with the man-advantage.
