Rocky River High softball player Tess Carroll is student athlete of the week

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio - Rocky River High School is where we caught this week's student athlete of the week.

Tess Carroll is the catcher for the Lady Pirates varsity softball team.  But when Tess is not on the softball field, she is a part time caregiver for her homebound father with Muscular Dystrophy,  and her mother that has terminal cancer.

"Softball is my escape, I use it to clear my mind.  When I'm on the field I can forget about everything.  I love going home to my family I would never change anything, you just have to work hard it's just a part of life," said Carroll.

"Tess has been a inspiration to our team and our coaching staff.  She rallied behind the team and the players rallied around her. She faced a lot of obstacles in her short life that many of us don't face in a lifetime and she's meeting those obstacles head on," said head softball coach Duane Sunagel.

While in school Carroll is also a member of National Honor Society, Science Olympiad and flag squad for the marching band and she plays the clarinet for the concert band.  With her busy life Tess still maintains a 3.8 grade point average.
