Verrazano and Vyjack in Wood Memorial

Chrisandthecapper has inside post

The $1 million Wood Memorial takes place this afternoon with undefeated Verrazano favored in this race.  Verrazano has been to the winners' circle his last three races taking the Tampa Bay Derby by three lengths and today's race should bring about another victory.

Chrisandthecapper will break from post 1 with current odds of 30/1.  He's owned by Don Lombardi and is named after Brooklyn Nets' radio broadcast team Chris Carrino and Tim Capstraw.  He won his last race out, a maiden on March 9.  He is trained by Servis and Lezcano will ride.

Normandy Invasion will break from post 2.  He will have a lot of people watching him in this race as he was one of the better two year olds in training last year.  He does exhibit issues breaking from the gates, but has been training well.    Odds are 5/1, is trained by Chad Brown and Castellano will ride.  He needs to finish in the one, two order to qualify for the Kentucky Derby.

Quinzieme Monarque is named in reference to Louis XV, a French monarch from the 1700's, will take post 3.  He has placed fourth his last three races with slower fractions.  Odds are 30/1, he is trained by Thomas Albertrani and Ortiz will ride.

Elnaawi will come from post 4.  This colt is familiar with the track taking third in the Gotham against Vyjack.  This one should be show up in the super wagering and will have a jockey change with Eddie Castro.  Kiaran McLaughlin is the trainer with odds of 12/1.

Vyjack is breaking from post 5.  He was first in the Gotham Stakes on March 2 and is undefeated in all of his starts.  He's a late runner and I expect to see him rallying late into the stretch again today.  He is trained by Rudy Rodriguez and Joel Rosario is the jockey with odds of 4/1.

Mr. Palmer will come from post 6.  He won his last two races and is named after golfer Arnold Palmer.  He has been improving and stretching out his stride.  He is trained by Bill Mott and Alvarado will ride with odds of 12/1.

Always in a Tiz will come from post 7 with a big jockey change up here as three time Kentucky Derby winning jockey Calvin Borel will be steering this one!  This horse had a poor showing in the Southwest Stakes in February, but it's always fun to watch Calvin ride the rails.  We'll see what he can do.  This horse is named after 2000 Horse of the Year Tiznow and is trained by Dominick Schettino with odds of 15/1.

Verrazano will break from post 8 and is trained by Todd Pletcher.  With an undefeated record this horse is favored at 4/5 odds but that should change a bit come post time.  This horse is solid and looks to be the man amongst the boys in the field.  He took first in the Tampa Bay Derby and he should be fun to watch today.  Veteran jockey Johnny Velazquez will ride this horse who already has enough points to head to Louisville a month from now.

Go Get the Basil is breaking from post 9 and took second in an Allowance race at Aqueduct in March with some impressive speed.  His numbers have been improving, he is trained by Richard Violette and Jose Ortiz will ride.  Current odds are at 30/1.

Freedom Child will round out the field from post 10 with some of the better speed his last race at the distance.  He is trained by Thomas Albertrani and Elvis Trujillo will ride with odds listed at 30/1.

This race will really be the battle between Verrazano and Vyjack if the distance doesn't prove to be an issue for Vyjack.   Normady Invasion will be trying to upset the field as he is familiar with the Aqueduct track.  We'll see if he shows up today.  Post time is at 6:28p.m. (ET).
