The Santa Anita Derby in Arcadia, California is one of the big races this weekend leading toward the Kentucky Derby. Qualifying points to be awarded for the race are 100 to the winner, 40 points for second, 20 for third and 10 points for fourth.
This race was scheduled to have two rivals from the San Felipe contesting it out but Hear The Ghost will not run, making it Flashback's race to lose as the 9/5 favorite. Even with a third place finish he should secure a spot in the Derby lineup.
Storm Fighter has one career win in a maiden race in March with odds listed at 20/1. He has been training well but taking a chance here with such a competitive field.
Goldencents won the Sham Grade 3 and the Delta Jackpot but took fourth in the San Felipe. He is currently ranked #15 in the Derby lineup with 29 points. He'll need to finish in the top three if he plans on getting to Louisville in May. The University of Louisville Basketball Coach Rick Pitino owns part of this colt and I hope he can dominate the track just like Pitino's Basketball team has dominated the courts leading up to the Final Four!
Super Ninety Nine and Power Broker are both trained by Bob Baffert. Super Ninety Nine is ranked #26 on the Derby list and Power Broker is ranked #27. Both will need to finish in the win, place position for a shot at the Kentucky Derby. Super Ninety Nine won the Southwest Stakes on a wet track in February and was then listed as the favorite in the Rebel Stakes, but fell short with a fifth place finish in mid-March.
Power Broker is under the same ownership as Flashback, but this colt has not raced this year. As a two year old he finished fifth in the Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile on November 3. Even though he has been away from the track since then he has been conditioning well. Bejarano is scheduled to ride.
Last year's Santa Anita Derby winner, I'll Have Another, went on to take the Kentucky Derby Roses making this an important race for those probable runners in Louisville a month from now. Bob Baffert has won this Derby six different times with his most recent win happening in 2011 with Midnight Interlude. Post time is 7:00p.m. (ET) the field is as follows:
