Thistledown to host $100,000 Ohio Derby this weekend

CLEVELAND - A small field of three year-olds are scheduled to contend in Saturday's 78th running of the $100,000 Ohio Derby at Thistledown.

This year's Tampa Bay Derby winner, Prospective, will go off as the favorite with odds listed at 3-5.  The son of Malibu Moon will carry the most weight in the field of 124lbs.  He had a tough luck break in this year's Kentucky Derby.  The colt clipped heels after coming from the gates and experienced heavy traffic problems finishing 18th.  In early June Prospective claimed The Victoria Park Stakes by two lengths at Woodbine.  With a win in tomorrow's Ohio Derby, trainer Mark Casse will look toward an invite to the Haskell Invitational or the Jim Dandy Stakes with his colt. Of the four contenders entered in the Ohio Derby, Prospective has the most earnings with $535,235 listed to date.  He will break from post 1 with jockey Jermaine Bridgmohan.

Politicallycorrect will break from the second post and his trainer Wesley Ward is expecting his speedy colt to head right to the front of the pack.  He took third In his most recent race at Belmont, the Easy Goer Stakes on June 9th.  His current odds are listed at 3-1 and will have jockey Vic Santiago on board.

Defiant Flyer will come from post three with one of Thistledown's most experienced riders Luis Gonzalez.  His current odds are listed at 12/1.  Despite being unplaced in his last three starts he did win the Jim's Orbit Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park in February.

Z Rockstar is trained by Donnie K. Von Hemel who won the 2011 Ohio Derby with Caleb's Posse.  Caleb's Posse went on to win the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile last November and contend for title Horse of the Year.  Recently, Z Rockstar finished third in the Prairie Mile Stakes at Prairie Meadows on June 2nd.  The gelding is 9/2 on the morning line and will be ridden by jockey Channing Hill.

Swage has scratched from the field after registering a fever yesterday morning at Prairie Meadows.

The first post time scheduled at Thistledown on Saturday is at 1:50pm.  The 1 1/16 mile Ohio Derby will post at 5:30pm and is listed as the 8th race on the card.
