Yesterday workouts continued for the Kentucky Derby contenders already at the track.
Shortly after 11:30AM on Monday, a Tex Sutton charter flight arrived in Louisville with this weekend's likely favorite for Saturday's Kentucky Derby, California Chrome. He was expected to hit the track today with a light workout.
Dance With Fate arrived in Louisville yesterday from Southern California. His recent win in the Blue Grass Stakes has earned him a spot in the starting lineup and he will be ridden by Corey Nakatani.
Wicked Strong left New York on Saturday evening arriving in Kentucky on Sunday. He made it onto the track yesterday morning galloping on a sloppy surface under exercise rider K. Pahal. Trainer Jimmy Jerkens thought he looked good and comfortable while switching his leads well.
Samraat is expected to leave for Louisville via a charter flight yesterday evening from Aqueduct racetrack. Trainer Rick Violette was keeping things light as Samraat breezed one mile in 1:45:91 on Friday at Aqueduct. Samraat finished second to Wicked Strong in the Wood Memorial in March.
Todd Pletcher's four entries took in one mile jogs yesterday morning. Half mile final Kentucky Derby works were put in on Sunday morning as Intense Holiday went (:48:60), We Miss Artie (:49:20), Danza (:48:80) and Vinceremos (:49). Pletcher was not pleased with the workout given by We Miss Artie and was going to discuss the possibility of another race for the Canadian-born colt with owner Ramsey. Ramsey is taking the reins on this one and We Miss Artie will be in the starting gates on Saturday.
Hoppertunity and Chitu took to the track under early morning rains on Monday. Hoppertunity breezed a half-mile in :48 with stablemate Drill. Chitu worked six furlongs from the gate in 1:13:20. Jockey Mike Smith will take the mount on Hoppertunity in the Derby and Chitu will be ridden by Martin Garcia.
Wildcat Red breezed five furlongs on Sunday in (1:04:40) and walked the shedrow Monday morning.
Ride On Curlin worked seven furlongs on Sunday in 1:29 and walked the shedrow Monday morning.
Tapiture worked a five furlong gallop-out in 1:04:08. At 6:45am yesterday Churchill had to suspend workouts due to inclement weather.
Medal Count took in a light jog over the Churchill surface. On Saturday he went five furlongs.
Ring Weekend and Bayern will not be competing in this weekend's race as they are officially off the Derby roster.
