Kentucky Derby Wild Card Race - Coolmore Lexington

Field of 11 for Coolmore Lexington Stakes

With only a few weeks left until the Kentucky Derby there are two Wild Card races left on the schedule for those looking to obtain Derby qualifying points.

This weekend the $200,000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes, worth 20 points to the winner, may give some a chance to enter the Derby while another is looking for points to enter the Kentucky Oaks.  Either way, those running are seeking a profitable attempt to make something happen after failing at their last time out on the track.

Pure Fun is the only filly entered in this race and was listed as the favorite in the Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway but placed third.  She won a Grade I race on Hollywood's synthetic track last December, and took a 3 month layoff before entering the Bourbonette in March.  Pure fun is listed with odds of 7/2, is trained by Kenneth McPeek and will have Rosie Napravnik at the controls out of gate 11.

Pick of the Litter will break from post 2 and is trained by Dale Romans.  He was entered in the Florida Derby but took sixth.  His breeding dictates that he may be better suited for the synthetic surfaces and if that holds true, keep your eyes on him.  Castanon will remain at the controls with odds of 6/1.

Sunbean is slotted in post 6 with three wins to his credit prior to the Louisiana Derby.  The Louisiana Derby was a tough race for this colt after being blocked in the stretch and then stalled by traffic.  I'm hoping for some improved results with decent speed ratings with Gary Stevens riding.  He is trained by Michael Maker with current odds of 4/1.

Trainer Graham Motion has entered Cerro who will break from post 8.  This horse has been off since his sixth place finish in the Fountain of Youth in February, but was quick to the pace in his previous race in January.  Joel Rosario will jockey with odds of 5/1.  Don't discount him in your superfecta.

Examen will break from post 7 with odds of 5/1.  Despite slower speed ratings there is a lot to like here as this horse has been shipped from Santa Anita and jockey Garrett Gomez has come along with him.  He won his last two times out and is the son of Giant's Causeway with odds of 5/1.

River Rocks has won two out of four races and is trained by Wayne Catalano.  Breaking from post 3 this horse should take the early lead and be capable to hold his pace well in this race.  His odds are 12/1 and James Graham will ride.

The remaining field is as follows:  PP1 Winning Cause, Odds 5/1, Trained by Todd Pletcher, Jockey Leparoux    PP4  Hip Four Sixtynine, Odds 50/1, Trained by Bobby Barnett, Jockey Edgar Prado,  PP9  Wings of Fortune,  Odds 15/1, Trainer Michael Maker, Jockey Calvin Borel   PP10 General Election, Odds 15/1, Trainer Kellyn Gorder, Jockey J. Rocco

The winner of this race could have the possibility of going into the Derby lineup as the cut-off point currently stands at 20 points, and there are a couple of contenders on the Derby leaderboard sitting with  20 points.  If this becomes the case the non-restricted stakes race earnings would be the determining factor as to who would get a place in the Derby starting gates.  Post time is scheduled for 5:13pm.
