CLEVELAND - The horses have been arriving daily at Churchill Downs and are busy completing final workouts before Kentucky Derby 138 takes place on May 5th.
Who will have what it takes to complete the 1 1/4 mile distance of the Derby?
Union Rags, a leading contender for this year's race is trained by Michael Matz and is the son of Dixie Union. Matz trained Barbaro at Keeneland in 2006 prior to winning the Kentucky Derby that year. Union Rags also trained at Keeneland and had a workout on April 20, in 47:40. He is now at Churchill Downs where he will have his final work out.
Wood Memorial runner-up Alpha is still in New York and has been receiving additional gate training at Belmont Park. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin hopes this will improve his colts behavior since having issues in the gate during the Breeders' Cup Juvenile in November of last year at Churchill. Alpha will breeze at Belmont on Saturday and fly to Churchill on Monday where he will be given extra attention if needed.
Florida Derby winner Take Charge Indy has been training in Palm Meadows, Florida. He looks good and jockey Calvin Borel (Bo-rail) will take the mount on this one. Indy had 5F in 1:00:04 on Thursday.
Daddy Nose Best has been galloping over the Churchill track. His work out was slow.
Sabercat is trained by Steve Asmussen he has been galloping out over the Churchill track as well.
Arkansas Derby winner Bodemeister looked good on the Churchill track earlier in the week going 5F in 1:00:80.
Liaison, Dullahan, Hansen, Mark Valeski and Optimizer are training at the Churchill track with Trinniberg at Calder, and Creative Cause putting in 5F in 1:00:02 at Hollywood Park.
We are about a week away from one of the most anticipated races of the year with the post position draw taking place this coming Wednesday at Churchill Downs. The draw will put the picture into focus as to how this 20 horse field will take shape.
