Cleveland - Ohio native Jockey Jane Magrell is getting ready to capture her 1,000th win and a team of fans are hopeful it will happen at Thistledown Racino this week.
On Tuesday evening, Jane claimed her 999th victory at Mountaineer Park on board a horse named Thirty Eight Plus that paid $19.00 win, $7.60 place and $6.40 to show. She is known around the tracks for bringing in the long shots and says, “When I’m given opportunities, I take them.” Wednesday she was given a mount at Thistledown by the owner of Devilish Gait, Charlie Williams. Magrell has ridden for him numerous times. It was hoped Williams could assist her to her 1,000th goal by giving her the opportunity to ride but she finished ¾ of a length behind Ride That Ticket taking second.
Jane has been riding since 1986 and is the first woman to ride in both the Ohio Derby and West Virginia Derby. She says she loves what she does and wouldn’t want to be doing anything else.
A typical day for her begins at 4am with exercising and galloping horses. Her racing schedule can take her from Thistledown, to Mountaineer Park, to Presque Isle. Along with being a competitor, she acts as her own agent. This enables her to pursue a position riding at her own discretion. Jane is thankful to the owners and trainers that have given her opportunities and have helped her career.
Jane’s concern on and off the track is for the safety of the animals, herself and fellow riders, but accidents do happen. As careful as she is, she has experienced her share of injuries. Over the years she has broken both of her hips, a leg, her collar bone, a foot, an arm and has suffered repeated concussions. She said, “To be successful in this sport you have to be tough.”
Jane is a very skilled and talented rider. She has worked hard and aligned herself with good people. While there aren’t many female jockeys at Thistledown, her dedication and keeping a level head has been a recipe for accomplishments.
Today Jane finds herself slotted in three different races on the Thistledown card. Her first race is Race 5 (post time 2:55pm) on board Go Giovanni Go. The horse is trained by Richard Genovese and has odds listed at 10/1. She rides Redriteeightyeight in Race 7 (post time 3:55pm) with odds of 10/1. The horse is trained by Richard Genovese. She’ll have one more chance at reaching her 1,000 race goal in Race 8 (post time 4:25pm) on board Langley Field. With odds of 8/1 the horse is trained by R. Zielinski.
After all the years Jane has been involved in the racing circuit she still finds it exciting going to the winner’s circle. Hopefully, today history will be made with the landmark 1,000th victory for Jane. Best Wishes and Good Luck!
