Florida Derby hosts Holy Bull rivals Shanghai Bobby and Itsmyluckyday

MIAMI - The 2013 $1 Million Florida Derby has a field of 10 contenders in Saturday's race at Gulfstream Park with each trying to commander the coveted 100 points by winning to get them in the Kentucky Derby starting gates a little over a month from now.

Here's what's happening in the field.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Shanghai Bobby enters this race with over a million dollars in earnings but only 24 points to his credit with this year's new Kentucky Derby points system. He was undefeated going into the Holy Bull on January 26, and opened up with most of the lead until he was outrun by It'smyluckyday making him the second choice in the Florida Derby field at 5/2. With 5 wins to his credit the son of Harlan's Holiday will be ridden by Napravnik and is trained by Todd Pletcher. This team will have to pull it together and watch their pace into the stretch if they want to accomplish anything here.

Holy Bull winner Itsmyluckyday drew post 3 and is listed as the favorite with odds of 2/1.  This son of Lawyer Ron is trained by Edward Plesa, has won his last two races with triple digit speed ratings.  The pace will not be a problem for this colt, he should have a nice trip. Elvis Trujillio is the jockey.

Fountain Of Youth winner Orb will break from post 6 with two out of his last three wins happening at Gulfstream Park. This horse has shown his versatility and I believe he'll be right there with Itsmyluckyday in the stretch. His trainer McGaughey hasn't been to the derby since 2002 but he knows how to get there. Current odds are at 3/1.  Veteran jockey John Velazquez will ride.

PP2 Pick of the Litter.  He was first in a maiden race at Gulfstream, has current odds of 6/1, trained by Dale Romans and Castanon will ride.

PP4 Pontiff is trained by Dale Romans and won a maiden at Gulfstream his last time out.  Current odds are 30/1 and Garcia will ride.

PP5 Frac Daddy took 6th in the Holy Bull, is trained by Kenneth McPeek, jockey Lanerie with odds of 20/1.

PP7 Indy's Illusion is a late edition to the field, is from the AP Indy bloodline and finished second in a claiming race at Gulfstream in early March.  Barclay Tagg is the trainer, Maragh will ride with odds at 20/1.

PP8 Merit Man ran second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint in November, will now run without blinkers and should be the pace setter for this race. Desormeaux will ride and is trained by Hess with odds at 15/1.

PP9 Are You Kidding Me took 2nd in an Allowance race at Tampa last time out with current odds at 15/1.

PP10 Narvarz took 1st in a Gulfstream Allowance last race, is trained by Bezara and has current odds of 20/1.
