This year California Chrome's quest for the crown was derailed with a disappointing 4th place finish in the Belmont Stakes. However, it's never too early to begin tracking the 2-year-old horses who are searching for a place in the Triple Crown racing season next year trying to make history happen.
With all the positive buzz happening in Northeast Ohio lately, there may be another shining star on the horizon giving the city reason to be Cleveland proud. This interest comes in the form of a two-year-old colt called Cleveland Sound who is contending in this weekend's Toyota Saratoga Special Stakes (G2) in Saratoga, NY.
Cleveland Sound is a two-year-old colt sired by More Than Ready out of Twilight Service, by Horse Chestnut. The colt broke its maiden at Delaware Park last month giving West Point Thoroughbreds their first juvenile winner of the 2014 season.
The stunning horse is named after Cleveland Radio station 87.7FM and operates under General Manager, Tom Wilson. Cleveland Sound was purchased last year by Terry Finley at the 2013 Saratoga yearling sale, and is owned in partnership with West Point Thoroughbreds and partners Tom Wilson and Misty Gonzalez. Tom Wilson said, "The horse has been training well. We are more than thrilled with his win at Delaware and are looking forward to watching him at Saratoga."
The horse had been training at Fair Hill in Maryland before being entered in a $37k Msw race at Delaware Park last month. He had 4-1 odds at post time taking the early lead against the rail and clearing the opening quarter in :22:52. He was challenged in this 5 furlong race by Legal Punch and Pride of Stride but claimed the win by 1-1/4 lengths.
It was a great win for this first time starter. Tomorrow he'll break from the 9th post in the Toyota Saratoga Special G2., which is the Race 10 on the Saratoga card. Some of the early speed will be to the inside of him with Mr. Z (PP3), Tizcano (PP4) and Cinco Charlie (PP7). Cleveland Sound is trained by Graham Motion with his last workout taking place on August 7th at Saratoga, breezing 3F in 37.91 on the dirt.
The races two year old horses contend in are an important feature to the racing calendar. As we turn our attention to the new crop of two year olds starting to compete, many fans will be eagerly watching to see how this already very professional horse, Cleveland Sound, develops and matures as he is exposed to new challenges under the saddle. Good luck and best wishes!
