COLUMBUS, Ohio - It's official, the Ohio State Buckeyes will open up the 2014 College Football season as the No. 5 best team in the country.
The Associated Press released its 2014 College Football preseason poll Sunday. The defending national champion Florida State Seminoles retook the No. 1 overall position with Nick Saban's Alabama Crimson Tide closely behind in second.
Big Ten Conference rival and Buckeye's kryptonite in 2013, Michigan State Spartans ranked No. 8 in the poll but are immediately considered a threat to make another run at the Big Ten Championship crown.
Last week, Sports Illustrated predicted the Buckeyes would be one of the four teams to make it to the first playoff in college football history along with Florida State, Alabama and Oklahoma. However, with only the No. 35 toughest schedule, for the prediction to become a reality, the Buckeyes will likely have to go undefeated in the regular season for the third consecutive year and win the Big Ten Title.
Ohio State arch-rival Michigan was not in the AP top 25 or USA Today top 25 for the first time since 2011.
Ohio State's 2014 campaign begins on Aug. 30 against Navy in Baltimore.
