KENT, Ohio - A Kent State fraternity has been suspended for three years following allegations of hazing, the school confirmed Wednesday.
Kappa Alpha Psi's suspension takes effect immediately.
NewsChannel5 obtained a formal letter notifying the fraternity of the suspension that states that the fraternity has "a recent history of violations that have resulted in social probation and other investigations of misconduct related to membership intake activity." The university, however, would not outline the hazing allegations or history of violations.
Under the terms of the suspension, the chapter will not be allowed to function as a student organization or participate in Greek life activities until May 2016.
Kent State released the following written statement about the incident:
"Kent State University developed policies to guide student organizations in creating a positive, safe, and successful environment for group activities. Adhering to these policies helps maintain the integrity of all student groups and insures that all who participate are safe and treated fairly. When these policies are violated, the university must take appropriate measures, so we have suspended Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. for three years for failing to adhere to those policies established for student organizations. "
The reaction after hearing this on campus was mostly of shock Wednesday because not to many students said they knew of the fraternity. "I'd say I know a good bit of them because they all participate in the events that we do on campus and I've never heard of them before," said Ashley Ferrari, a Kent sorority member. Several more in and around campus agreed.
NewsChannel5 did find a couple of students who confirmed the fraternity is, or was at Kent. They didn't want to speak on camera but were surprised telling WEWS they didn't know of any trouble.
A spokesperson for Kent State University said the President of Kent's Kappa Alpha Psi chapter was given a certain period of time to appeal the sanctions and did not hence the three year suspension.
