The 2016 MLB season is, so far, a winning one for the Cleveland Indians, but The Tribe does not appear to be winning over many fans at home games.
According to ESPN, The Indians are averaging 14,525 fans per home game this season. That puts Cleveland in last place behind Tampa Bay and Oakland. And the team is far from the first place L.A. Dodgers, second place St. Louis Cardinals or third place San Francisco Giants, all of which are average more than 40,000 fans per home game.
Are the Cavs soakings up all the attention? One fan told newsnet5.com that could be the case, but team spokesman Curtis Danburg put part of the blame on Cleveland’s cold spring weather.
Now, with the heat here to stay and promotions like Dollar Dog night along with a string of home games against marquee teams, Danburg is betting on an attendance turnaround.
“What we’ve done over the past two years is completely renovate and enhance the experience for our fans to want to come here more than one time a year and be a part of the experience,” he said. “And with the team we have, now’s the time for fans to get behind this team and really provide that home field advantage to propel us into a post-season birth.”
The Indians host the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night at 7:10.
