Browns hire new head coach

Browns spokesperson denies a report the team has picked Pettine as Cleveland's new head coach, telling NewsChannel5 the front office "may or may not make that determination today."

Could a decision come from the team today? ESPN reports: "Pettine will be one of the two candidates to fly to Cleveland to interview with the Browns again on Thursday."

The Denver Post says Gase is the one stepping away from the Browns.

ESPN: Browns front office made their case for firing Chud by releasing research that only two coaches over the last 20 years--out of the 28 who had 4 or fewer wins their first year--went on to multiple play-off appearances.

Deadspin says "Cleveland's situation is getting dumber," pointing out the team has "no coaching staff now" after Turner and Horton bolted.

ESPN's Bill Williamson reports the Browns may talk to San Francisco's defensive line coach Jim Tomsula. He was the team's interim head coach at the end of Mike Singletary's tenure. 

Chances may be good the Browns look to the 49ers for someone. After all GM Mike Lombardi's son, Mick, is assistant to head coach Jim Harbaugh. (Not to mention former Browns head coach--and defensive-minded guy--Eric Mangini is Harbaugh's Senior Offensive Consultant.) 

Then again, Harbaugh says it'd take a smart club to hire one of his assistants so maybe that's the problem?

ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi thinks Quinn has the edge over Gase and adds the team may expand its search to include "somebody to agree with them that Johnny Manziel can stay healthy and win..."

That latter part could be true, if a CBS Sports report about the Browns trading up to get Manziel is to be believed.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport tweets the Browns want to interview Seattle DC Dan Quinn again and says he'd likely want Kyle Shanahan, Gary Kubiak or Mike Mularkey as his offensive coordinator.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Bills DC Mike Pettine will get a second interview with Browns.

While the Browns wade patiently through their candidates list, they could soon be looking for new offensive and defensive coordinators. ESPN reports OC Norv Turner could be heading to Minnesota to join their new head coach Mike Zimmer, who just came over from the Bengals.

The two big names are Bill O'Brien at Penn State and Josh McDainels who is with the New England Patriots. They both have ties with Browns General Manager Mike Lombardi.
