Robert Griffin III will be the starting quarterback for the Browns this season.

Hue Jackson announced Monday that Griffin will have his first start Friday in Cleveland's preseason opener against the Packers.

Griffin signed with the team in March. Before that, he played with the Washington Redskins for four seasons.

Since the start of training camp, Griffin has been competing with Josh McCown, Austin Davis and Cody Kessler for the starting position.

Rumors swirled last week that the Cowboys were looking at McCown for their backup quarterback opening.

When asked about the rumors at training camp, McCown said his focus was on Cleveland.

"For me, my job and my heart is here," McCown said last week. "And I’m doing everything I can to help the Cleveland Browns be good. So that’s what I’m about and like I told you guys before, you spend five minutes in this city and it’s easy to be 'all in' because of how the people feel about this team."

Hue Jackson commented on Griffin's performance on Saturday.

“I think I’ve said everything every day that everyone is seeing him get better and better every day," Jackson said. "I’m not surprised. We try to create the right environment for him to be all he can be, and he’s working extremely hard because this is something he really wants to do. Obviously, we still have work to do, but I think he’s done a great job thus far. There are still some ladders to climb, and we’re going to keep climbing them.”
