BRISTOL, Conn. - As the Browns announced the expected firing of Eric Mangini around 10 a.m. Monday, ESPN viewers saw anchor Hannah Storm and NFL analyst Adam Schefter apparently celebrate the news.
The two started laughing and high-fived as they announced the news, and Schefter told someone named Josh (likely co-anchor Josh Elliot), who was off-set, that he gets “50 bonus points.”
The initial excitement from the two could be ill-perceived by Cleveland fans or Mangini supporters, but Storm and Schefter quickly tried to cover their steps, explaining that they were not trying to make light of the situation.
ESPN also offered a formal apology for the inappropriate behavior.
"Their actions were inappropriate, and they immediately recognized this and acknowledged it on-air," says ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz in a statement.
It appeared that they had been discussing the possibility of the news breaking during a commercial break, and then celebrated as the announcement was made during their live segment.
