BEREA, Ohio - The Browns held their shortest team practice on Friday on day eight of training camp in anticipation of Saturday night's family night at First Energy Stadium.
The big surprise: Running back Trent Richardson did not practice. Head coach Rob Chudzinski said Richardson was kicked in the calf during Thursday's practice and is listed as day to day. Richardson has had a very good training camp through the first seven practices, looking healthy and extremely quick with the football.
The red zone area continues to be a huge emphasis for the Browns as the team hopes to take advantage of Norv Turner's style of offense along with the multiple weapons the team offers second-year quarterback Brandon Weeden.
Surprise visitor: Former Browns team president Mike Holmgren made a surprise visit to training camp on Friday. Holmgren is in town for the Hall of Fame ceremonies in Canton. Holmgren said he is here to support long-time friend and Super Bowl winning coach Bill Parcells, along with a pair of his former players: Warren Sapp and Cris Carter.
Holmgren said it was not his intention to come to practice, he was driving by and was hoping to "sneak" into the facility and say hello when he realized the team was out of the field. Holmgren spent about 20 minutes out on the field talking to Jimmy Haslam and Mike Lombardi before heading off the field.
Bike Brigade: Browns players held out of practice on Friday include Montario Hardesty (Hamstring) T.J. Ward (Hamstring) Trevin Wade, David Nelson (Knee) and Brad Smelley.
Turn on the lights: The Browns will make their first team visit to First Energy Stadium Saturday night for the team's annual family night. The team will practice in full pads beginning at 6:30 p.m. and it is open to the public.
Wind beaker: Rob Chudzinski said that special teams coach Chris Tabor has been making daily visits to First Energy Field with kickers Shayne Graham and Brandon Bogotay to get use to the changing conditions.
Trent Richardson update: Trent Richardson met with media after practice and said, "The shin ain't no problem" and he plans to play in all the preseason games as well as a full regular season. Richardson said he feels he has been running well in camp and will be held out of Saturday's family night and return to practice on Monday.
