It appears more and more likely Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam's spirit animal is the honey badger because he just doesn't seem to care what people think.
Fire your coach after one year? Sure. Fire the GM and CEO three weeks after hiring a new head coach? No problem.
Contradict 49ers CEO Jed York's attempt to deny rumors the Browns tried to trade for head coach Jim Harbaugh? Haslam don't care.
That's exactly what Haslam did in an interview with USA Today Sports.
He said, "There was an opportunity there, and it didn't materialize."
This after York turned to Twitter to reject Pro Football Talk's report.
NFL Network's Dan Hanzus says the whole thing has pulled the covers back on friction between Harbaugh and the front office.
You can even read between the lines of a January 21 press conference with Harbaugh, says John Breech at CBS Sports.
Harbaugh told reporters, "I've had conversations with the Browns." The assumption, Breech points out, was that he meant he was talking about his coaches but now...
And what about the guy the Browns did hire? Well, Mike Pettine doesn't seem bothered by the rumor.
"That''s noise... ...it shows that the organization is committed to turning things around," Pettine said.
